Benefits of Teledyne FLIR Thermal Cameras on ADAS and Autonomous Vehicles
SAFETY
Thermal cameras see through a wide variety of conditions including darkness, sunlight, headlight glare, shadows, and most fog 24 hours a day. They are especially good at detecting pedestrians, bicyclists, large animals, and other vulnerable road users.
SMARTER
Thermal imagery fills the performance gaps where existing vision sensors are challenged. They offer redundancy as well as complement existing visible sensors, radar, and LIDAR to improve detection and classification algorithms immediately through multispectral sensor fusion.
SECURE
Teledyne FLIR is the global leader in thermal camera quality and production for automotive, defense, industrial, and commercial uses. Teledyne FLIR produces the only US-manufactured, automotive-qualified thermal sensor that has been installed on nearly a million passenger vehicles.
See What Your ADAS is Missing
Five test cases were developed based on Euro NCAP testing protocols. The tests included scenarios not currently in standard AEB positive detection testing. The results are compelling. The fused thermal AEB system was successful in 25 of 25 tests at effectively preventing pedestrian injury with only two instances where the vehicle contacted, but did not knock down the SPT (soft pedestrian target).

Automatic Emergency Braking Fused with Thermal Can Save Lives
Existing AEB systems are powered by radar and visible cameras and none feature a thermal imaging camera. In our tests, we showed that Teledyne FLIR thermal cameras and the Research Vehicle consistently stopped safely in challenging conditions.
Thermal Cameras and Automatic Emergency Braking
Testing Automatic Emergency Braking with FLIR Thermal Cameras
Three test cases were conducted in both daylight and darkness, giving six datasets and 35 total test runs using an adult Euro NCAP Pedestrian Target (EPTa). Test results were promising. In all runs for all six test cases, the AEB system successfully brought the VUT to a stop before reaching the EPTa.
Creating Safer Roads of Tomorrow
Drive with clarity, even in the most challenging road conditions. Not one technology alone can create safer roads of tomorrow, but with the power of 3 sensor suites, achieve the impossible with thermal imaging.
